Our Past Creates a Compelling Future

Danone and WhiteWave shared a pioneering spirit—each having its own unique legacy of entrepreneurship and broader purpose, including a commitment to greater social and environmental good, from their very beginnings.

  • In 1942 as World War II engulfed Europe, our founder, Daniel Carasso, brought his family business to the United States and founded Dannon Milk Products, Inc. Dannon was the first American yogurt company, located in the Bronx, New York City. After years of tireless work, it became the first national fresh dairy brand and expanded quickly by continually bringing new types of yogurt to Americans. In 1972, our parent company, Danone, made its historic bold, dual-commitment to business success and social progress. Over the years, our company has grown its U.S. business to include Activia® , DanActive®, Danimals®, Dannon®, Danonino®, Light & Fit®, and Oikos® while also developing a robust market in Canada.

Before becoming part of Danone North America, WhiteWave built success as a purpose-driven food company. Made up of entrepreneurial brands that helped create whole new food movements in North America and Europe—most notably, organic and plant-based—the company was at the forefront of the changing ways people were choosing to eat and drink. This propelled WhiteWave to become the fastest growing food and beverage company in the U.S., while maintaining a deep commitment to transparency and responsible practices, with brands like Silk®, So Delicious®, Alpro®, Horizon®, Wallaby® Organic and International Delight.
